At Orum, being a remote-first company means many team members haven’t met in person, including me as founder and CEO. Recently, we changed that with an All Hands meeting in New York. Honestly, I wondered if in-person events would feel awkward like wedding guests forced to find common ground. But our “remote, not distant” culture shined through:
But Orum has built a “remote, not distant” culture. It’s our lifeblood. And that shows in moments like our All Hands: Everyone greeted each other with bear hugs and lots of laughs, and we left having made true connections over deep conversations.
We intentionally design these All Hands events. They aren't on a fixed schedule; we have to earn the opportunity to meet up. ., With new products like our patent-pending bank account verification solution Verify, our launch partnership with FedNow, and new support for use cases we’ve experienced a special shift. We plan for these events to be pretty short—capitalizing on the energy and excitement at its peak. We start with special dinners the night before our company-wide meeting, where executives host team members from various functions. These dinners focus on personal connections: discussing New Year’s resolutions, favorite $5 purchases, and even tattoo guns. (Last Thursday, as I came home from the dinner I hosted, each member of my executive team called me to say their dinner was undoubtedly the best!)
Friday was dedicated to Team Orum, with a packed one-day agenda. We invited several customers to share their experiences working with us for payments and instant bank account verification.
Let me tell you: That was powerful.
Hearing comments like “we decided to buy within hours” and “integrating with your platform was the easiest thing” was enlightening. But more impactful were stories about how our technology helps customers achieve their missions and pay it forward.
One Orum customer in wholesale distribution shared the story of a representative who came to work for him, previously earning no more than $15 per hour, to now earning substantial commission and an income available to him each day, immediately. He finally took his family to Disney World—a longtime dream that he thought was out of reach.
That’s why we dream big at Orum:
We know that by changing the financial system, we can create financial opportunity and access. We have an incredible foundation heading into 2024, and Team Orum is dreaming bigger than ever.
Our NYC All Hands meeting reinforced our belief in a remote, not distant culture. The personal connections we made during this event are invaluable, proving that in-person interactions can strengthen a remote-first company.
As we continue to innovate and grow, these moments will be crucial in maintaining our strong, connected culture at Orum
